Welcome to Women@Swansea Computer Science. We are students and researchers in the department with the aim to network, exchange ideas, and influence our field. We also support Athena SWAN activities in the Computational Foundry. See below for typical activies we are involved with.

News

  • A group of second year students in Computer Science form the Swansea Women in Computing Committee, with the aim to support future applicants and younger students. Excellent initiative.
  • First 2019/20 meeting of the group on 22/11/2019 to discuss participation on upcoming activites (BCSWomen Locelace Colloquium 2020, International Women's Day 2020), and give feedback on actions in the departmental Athena Swan application.
  • Ada Lovelace Day, October 2019, Scientific Talk and Panel discussion on Women in Academic with Professor Carola Schonlieb, Cambridge.
  • Women in STEMM Conference - Mosaig Room, Digital Technium, Swansea University (Singleton Campus), Wednesday 3 May 2017, 4-6pm. An informative panel discussion with STEMM professionals at the University, including a Q and A session and oppurtunities for networking. All welcome.
  • London Hopper Colloquium 2017 - London, Thursday 25 May 2017, 10am-4pm. The event includes talks by women researchers in computing, a presentation competition for female postgraduate students and oppurtunities to meet and network with other early career researchers in computing.   • BT Women in Tech event - Cardiff, Wednesday 15 February 2017.
  • STEMettes – Monster Confidence – Cardiff, Wednesday 12 October 2016, 1-5pm A group of staff and students from the department will be attending this event aimed at inspiring young women in STEM. The afternoon involves inspirational talks about STEM careers and opportunities, mock interviews, speed mentoring and career workshops chosen by attendees. More details can be found here.

  • March 2015: IT Wales - International Women's Day Celebration, Liberty Stadium.
  • March 2015: As part of International Women's Day, Inspiring Women is showcasing the achievements of women working with, studying at and supporting Swansea University in the past and present (including Beti Williams MBE, Dr Parisa Eslambolchilar and Kaushalya Kularatnam).

  • Swansea ScienceaGrrl, a local chapter of ScienceGrrl, is launched on 28 November 2013.
  • Welcome meeting for 2013/14 taking place on 21 November 2013, 2pm, Far-B.
  • BCS Lovelace Colloquium 2013, 4 April 2013. Alison represented Swansea Computer Science.

  • Dame Wendy Hall DBE, FRS, FREng, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Southampton, Dean of the Faculty of Physical and Applied Sciences and former president of the ACM is giving a distinguished lecture at Swansea! This FREE event is in collaboration with BCS Women in Wales, and sponsored by the British Computer Society (South Wales Branch) and a Web Science grant from the EPSRC Bridging the Gaps programme at Swansea. 6:30pm Wednesday 15th February 2012, Faraday Lecture Theatre, Faraday Building.   • Ramah Abdul-Haddi, Amna Bukhari (both Level 2) and Shanshan Wang (MSc) win prizes at BCS Women Lovelace Colloquium 2011 at Birmingham. See Hannah Dee's report on the BCS website.
  • Kaushalya Kularatnam wins price in British Council's International student awards 2011. See the University's News for more detail.
  • WTECH Cymru - Women as Professionals in IT Lampeter, 6 November 2010,

  • Kaushalya Kularatnam, a Swansea Level 2 Computer Science student, wins a 1st price at the Lovelace Colloquium 2010 Poster Competition in Cardiff (April 2010). Her poster Intellecutual Equals tells the story of Deep Blue. Below together with Nia Davies.
